"Greater Love Hath No Man"
Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
3 panels
I have always been drawn to sacrifice. Perhaps that is what led me to visit the Shrine of Remembrance during my short time in Melbourne.
Each year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the sun pierces a tiny portal in the ceiling of the shrine. Over the course of two minutes, its light traces a path across the word ‘Love’ which is inscribed on a plaque set in the middle of the floor of the monument. During these two minutes, the nation of Australia observes silence in remembrance of the service men and women who sacrificed life and limb during World War I.
The full inscription reads, “Greater Love Hath No Man.”
To The Wayfarer
You who pass by,
When you go home,
Tell them that for your tomorrow,
We gave our today.
