Sunrise Over Sailing Club

Hyannis Port Yacht Club, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, United States

1999

I am drawn to astronomical events. One year, I decided to visit the Hyannis Port Yacht Club, a place I studied for years, to photograph the summer solstice sunrise. The HPYC makes the sort of unassuming, iconic image that I have always favored.

In June, Cape Cod summer has not gotten into full gear, and the harbor is not yet full of the sailing vessels soon to arrive. Everything about this image conveys a placid sense of youthful promise as it awakens in the first blush of summer.

I made two photographs on this day, both with the same composition. This version is the first one I have worked up this far. It is not yet a finished image as I am still working on pulling more detail from the brightest parts of the sky. It’s there, and another round of adjustments is in the works.

The second image is coming along. I made it just a bit earlier in the morning, with the sun just on the horizon. Assuming that one comes together the way I expect, I’ll be adding it to the website shortly.
